Etsy Fees Explained: The Life of One Order
Etsy fees are easiest to understand as a story. Follow one order — a $50 item with $5 buyer-paid shipping — from publish to bank deposit: $0.20 to list, 6.5% at checkout, 3% + $0.25 when payment processes, maybe 15% or 12% later if an ad gets credit.
Rates as of , US sellers via Etsy Payments, USD, checked against Etsy’s legal fees page, the Etsy Payments policy and Etsy Help. Static math only, not a live calculator.
This page walks one order chronologically, not the whole schedule. For every line item at once, see Etsy seller fees: the full schedule, plus the resale marketplace fees hub and Etsy vs. eBay fees.
The fee map: what fires, and when
Four fee lines can touch this order; the rest of the page is that story in order of events. Assumptions: $50 item, $5 shipping, no gift wrap, tax $0.
| Fee | Cost | When it fires | What it covers |
|---|---|---|---|
| Listing | $0.20 | At publish | Four months or until sold; edits free |
| Renewal | $0.20 | After expiry, unsold | Another four-month run |
| Transaction | 6.5% | At checkout | Item + shipping + gift wrap; US sales tax excluded |
| Processing | 3% + $0.25 | When payment processes via Etsy Payments | Gross order, including shipping and tax |
| Offsite Ads | 15% or 12% | Later, if attributed to an offsite ad within 30 days | The attributed order; $100 cap per order |
These four lines are the only ones named here; two have deep dives: the listing fee deep dive and the deep Offsite Ads page.
Before any sale: the $0.20 listing fee
The story starts before a buyer exists: publishing a listing costs $0.20. It stays live four months or until it sells, whichever comes first, and editing while live costs nothing. If four months pass unsold and you renew, that is another $0.20 — a new run of the same listing.
The key model: this fee is sunk. It fires on publish day whether or not an order happens, so it is never a deduction on a sale — already paid before the buyer arrives.
Moment of sale: the 6.5% transaction fee
A buyer pays $50 for the item plus $5 shipping. At checkout Etsy charges 6.5% of item + shipping + any gift wrap; US sales tax is excluded from this base. No gift wrap, tax $0, so the base is $55.00:
6.5% × $55.00 = $3.575, rounded half-up to $3.58. Live rounding can differ by a cent on a half-cent base like this.
Getting paid: the 3% + $0.25 processing fee
As payment runs through Etsy Payments, Etsy charges 3% + $0.25 on the gross order — shipping and sales tax included, unlike the transaction fee:
3% × $55.00 + $0.25 = $1.65 + $0.25 = $1.90.
That is the tax asymmetry in one sentence: when sales tax applies, it is excluded from the 6.5% base but included in the 3% + $0.25 base. Order-side fees so far: $3.58 + $1.90 = $5.48; payout $55.00 − $5.48 = $49.52, before the $0.20 sunk at publish. Every base is broken down in Etsy seller fees: the full schedule.
Later, maybe: the Offsite Ads fee
Weeks later, one more line can appear: if this buyer clicked an offsite Etsy ad and purchased within 30 days, the order is attributed to that ad and an Offsite Ads fee is charged. The rate follows the shop’s trailing 365-day sales: 15% under $10,000, with an opt-out, and a mandatory 12% at $10,000 or more, capped at $100 per individual order. One edge rule: if the buyer’s last click was an Etsy Ads click, only the Etsy Ads fee applies.
On our $55.00 order: 15% × $55.00 = $8.25, or 12% × $55.00 = $6.60. The opt-out is stated as fact, not advice; rules on the deep Offsite Ads page; reducing Etsy fees covers where fees can be moved.
The fee timeline of one order
The whole life of the order as a ledger, in firing order:
| Stage | When | Fee line | Arithmetic | Amount |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Publish | Day 0, pre-sale | Listing | flat $0.20 | −$0.20, sunk |
| Checkout | Buyer pays | Transaction | 6.5% × $55.00 = $3.575 → $3.58 | $3.58 |
| Processing | With the order, via Etsy Payments | Processing | 3% × $55.00 + $0.25 = $1.90 | $1.90 |
| Attribution | Up to 30 days later, if attributed | Offsite Ads | 15% or 12% × $55.00 | $8.25 or $6.60 |
Three possible endings:
| Ending | Order-side fees | Total | Payout |
|---|---|---|---|
| No ad attributed | $3.58 + $1.90 | $5.48 | $55.00 − $5.48 = $49.52 |
| 15% (shop under $10k) | $3.58 + $1.90 + $8.25 | $13.73 | $55.00 − $13.73 = $41.27 |
| 12% (shop at $10k+) | $3.58 + $1.90 + $6.60 | $12.08 | $55.00 − $12.08 = $42.92 |
Payouts are before the publish-day $0.20 listing fee. For these numbers as a take rate, see how much Etsy takes from a sale; for the math run in both directions on paper, Etsy fee math, worked both ways — static, not a live tool.
How the four lines interact
- Only one fee fires without a buyer. The listing fee is spent on publish day whether or not the item sells; the other three ride on the order.
- Two fees stack on the same order, almost on the same dollars. Both hit the $55.00 here but diverge when sales tax applies — the 6.5% base excludes it, the 3% + $0.25 base includes it. The no-ads baseline: 9.5% + $0.25 per order.
- The last fee is conditional and retrospective. Offsite Ads is the only line that can arrive after the order feels finished, within the 30-day window, and the only capped one ($100). It is the difference between a $49.52 and $41.27 payout here.
Glossary: names on the bill
- Attribution window — the 30 days after an offsite ad click in which an order still counts as attributed.
- Order-side fees — fees deducted from the order itself (transaction, processing, Offsite Ads), unlike sunk costs.
- Payout — gross order minus order-side fees, before sunk listing fees.
- Sunk cost — money spent regardless of outcome; the $0.20 listing fee at publish.
- Trailing 365 days — the rolling one-year sales window setting the Offsite Ads rate: 15% with opt-out under $10,000; mandatory 12% at $10,000+.

Plain wording to paste into your shop records, using only the rates above:
- Bookkeeping line for publish day: “Listing published — $0.20 listing fee charged today. Sunk cost, four-month run.”
- Pricing note: “Every order pays 6.5% transaction plus 3% + $0.25 processing on the gross; attributed ads add 15% (or 12% at $10k+), max $100.”
- Checkout explainer for buyers: “Any sales tax shown at checkout is added there and does not change my listed price.”

Etsy fees explained: FAQ
When does each Etsy fee hit?
The $0.20 listing fee is charged at publish, and again on renewal after four unsold months. The 6.5% transaction fee and the 3% + $0.25 processing fee are charged on the order, at checkout and when payment is processed through Etsy Payments. Offsite Ads (15% or 12%) is charged later, only if the order is attributed to an offsite ad clicked within 30 days.
Is sales tax included in Etsy’s fee bases?
The two order fees treat tax differently: US sales tax is excluded from the 6.5% transaction fee but included, along with shipping, in the 3% + $0.25 processing base. The examples assume $0 tax, so both fees apply to the same $55.00.
Can I turn Offsite Ads off?
Under $10,000 in trailing 365-day sales the fee is 15%, with an opt-out; at $10,000 or more it is 12% and mandatory. It is capped at $100 per individual order, and if the buyer’s last click was an Etsy Ads click, only the Etsy Ads fee applies.
What does Etsy take from a $55 order with no ads attributed?
$5.48: a $3.58 transaction fee (6.5% × $55.00 = $3.575, rounded to $3.58) plus a $1.90 processing fee (3% × $55.00 + $0.25). Payout: $55.00 − $5.48 = $49.52, before the $0.20 listing fee already paid at publish.
