How to reduce Etsy fees: Offsite Ads is the lever, the rest is fixed
Most advice on how to reduce Etsy fees lists tactics that do not touch any fee line. Against Etsy’s published US schedule only Offsite Ads has a seller-side lever, and only below $10k. This page explains that decision and prices the consequence.
Etsy fee data checked <time datetime="2026-10-31">2026-10-31</time> against the Etsy legal fees page, Etsy Payments policy, Etsy Help and the Offsite Ads help article. Rates shown are for US sellers paid through Etsy Payments. United States, USD.

Short answer: one fee you can influence, three you cannot
Three of Etsy’s four US seller fee lines cannot be reduced: the $0.20 listing fee, the 6.5% transaction fee and the 3% + $0.25 processing fee have no opt-out, no tier and no discount. The one lever is Offsite Ads.
You can opt out of Offsite Ads only while your shop has made under $10k in the trailing 365 days. Once a shop reaches $10k in any 365-day window, participation is mandatory and the rate drops from 15% to 12% on attributed orders.
This page covers only levers Etsy publishes: the Offsite Ads opt-out, the 15% to 12% step, and pricing. It does not cover tax, accounting, or anything that would move a sale off Etsy.
Etsy’s four fees and which one has a lever (US, as of Oct 2026)
| Fee | Rate | Charged on | Seller lever |
|---|---|---|---|
| Listing | $0.20 flat per listing published or renewed | No sale; paid at publish or renewal | None on the fee itself |
| Transaction | 6.5% | Item + shipping + gift wrap (US sales tax excluded) | None; moving money between item price and shipping does not change the base |
| Payment processing | 3% + $0.25 per order | Gross order including shipping, and tax when applicable | None on the rate; the $0.25 is per order |
| Offsite Ads | 15% under $10k trailing 365 days; 12% at $10k+ | Attributed orders only; capped at $100 per order | Opt-out while under $10k; automatic step to 12% at $10k+; pricing |

Offsite Ads: the rules that decide what you can do
These four rules are what separate “opt out” from “priced in”. Each is from Etsy’s Offsite Ads help article, compiled 2026-10-31.
- Under $10k in trailing 365-day sales: 15% on attributed orders, optional (Offsite Ads help).
- At $10k or more in any 365-day window: 12% on attributed orders, and participation is mandatory thereafter (Offsite Ads help).
- Attribution: the buyer clicks an offsite ad and orders within 30 days; if the last click is an Etsy Ads click, only the Etsy Ads cost applies (Offsite Ads help).
- Cap: the fee never exceeds $100 on an individual order (Offsite Ads help).
Under $10k: the opt-out is the only true fee reduction on Etsy
Opting out removes the Offsite Ads fee on orders that would have been attributed, and changes nothing on any other order. What share of a shop’s sales come from Offsite Ads is shop-specific and not published, so this page does not estimate the saving.
- Opted out: $0 Offsite Ads on every order.
- Not opted out: 15% only on orders attributed within 30 days of an offsite click.
At $10k and above: the door closes, the rate drops to 12%
Participation is mandatory thereafter. The step from 15% to 12% is the only reduction left, and it is automatic. On the $55 order below it is worth $1.65 ($8.25 − $6.60). We use Etsy’s “mandatory thereafter” wording and do not claim more than that; confirm on the help article.
Worked order: $50 item + $5 shipping with Offsite Ads off, at 15% and at 12%
Examples assume a US seller on Etsy Payments with a US bank account, $5 buyer-paid shipping included in both percentage bases, no gift wrap, no sales tax, no Etsy Ads, no Etsy Plus or Pattern subscription, and payout equal to the order total minus order-side fees. The $0.20 listing fee is a sunk cost beneath the table, not deducted from the order. Each fee line is rounded half-up to the cent before summing; Etsy’s live rounding may differ by a cent. See how Feebrief estimates seller fees.
| Scenario | Transaction 6.5% | Processing 3% + $0.25 | Offsite Ads | Order-side fees | Payout |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Offsite Ads off or not attributed | $3.58 | $1.90 | $0.00 | $5.48 | $49.52 |
| Attributed, shop under $10k (15%, opt-out was available) | $3.58 | $1.90 | $8.25 | $13.73 | $41.27 |
| Attributed, shop at $10k+ (12%, mandatory) | $3.58 | $1.90 | $6.60 | $12.08 | $42.92 |
On a $50 item with $5 shipping, an attributed order costs $8.25 at 15% or $6.60 at 12%, taking the payout from $49.52 to $41.27 or $42.92. Order-side rates on the $55 base are about 9.96% off, 24.96% at 15% and 21.96% at 12%. The 12% row is our arithmetic from the published rate, not an Etsy-published example.
Pricing to absorb Offsite Ads: why “add 15%” is not enough
Sellers who cross $10k are often told to raise prices by the Offsite Ads percentage. That does not preserve net, because the markup is itself charged the 6.5%, 3% and Offsite Ads percentages. To keep a target net N on an attributed order, with shipping s and Offsite Ads rate a:
list price p = (N + $0.25) ÷ (0.905 − a) − s
| Scenario | List price | Fee base | Transaction | Processing | Offsite Ads | Payout | Versus $49.52 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Naive “add 15%” at 15% attribution | $57.50 | $62.50 | $4.06 | $2.13 | $9.38 | $46.93 | −$2.59 |
| Naive “add 12%” at 12% attribution | $56.00 | $61.00 | $3.97 | $2.08 | $7.32 | $47.63 | −$1.89 |
| Preserve net at 15% attribution | $60.93 | $65.93 | $4.29 | $2.23 | $9.89 | $49.52 | $0.00 |
| Preserve net at 12% attribution | $58.41 | $63.41 | $4.12 | $2.15 | $7.61 | $49.53 | +$0.01 |
Listing at $57.50 and being attributed at 15% nets $46.93, which is $2.59 short of $49.52. Preserving $49.52 under a 15% attribution needs $60.93 (about a 21.9% markup), and under 12% it needs $58.41 (about 16.8%). The continuous answers are $60.92 and $58.40; the table rounds up so the target is cleared under either rounding convention. Each fee line is rounded half-up to the cent; see how Feebrief estimates seller fees.
A list price applies to every buyer, attributed or not, so pricing every listing at the preserve-net figure over-recovers on orders that are not attributed. The honest planning number is a blend based on your own attributed share, which only you can read from your shop stats. Hypothetical, not asserted: if one order in five were attributed at 15%, the expected Offsite Ads cost is 3% of the base and the list price that preserves $49.52 on average is about $51.88. Whether buyers accept a higher price is a demand question this page does not answer.
What you cannot reduce: $0.20 listing, 6.5% transaction, 3% + $0.25 processing
- Listing, $0.20: flat per listing published or renewed, and the only Etsy fee that does not scale with price.
- Transaction, 6.5%: a fixed rate on item + shipping + gift wrap. Free shipping does not reduce it: a $55 item with $0 shipping and a $50 item with $5 shipping both have a $55 base and $5.48 in order-side fees.
- Processing, 3% + $0.25: a fixed rate on the gross order. The $0.25 is per order, not per item: two separate $25 orders pay $1.00 each ($2.00 total), one $50 order pays $1.75. That difference is buyer behavior, not a seller lever.
For contrast, Mercari seller fees and take-home estimator charges a single percentage on item plus shipping.
This page is static math, not a live Feebrief calculator
Feebrief’s interactive fee comparer currently covers eBay, Poshmark, Mercari, Depop, Vinted and Whatnot only. Etsy is not in that data set, so the figures on this page are static worked examples from Etsy’s published fee pages, not a live Feebrief calculator. We will say so here if that changes. See resale marketplace fees compared and how Feebrief estimates seller fees. For live examples, see the eBay seller fees and take-home estimator and the Depop seller fees and take-home estimator, which excludes Depop’s optional Boosted Listings from its estimate. Etsy fees FAQ
My shop just passed $10k and Offsite Ads turned on. Can I opt out again?
No. The opt-out is available only while the shop has made under $10k in the trailing 365 days. Once a shop reaches $10k in any 365-day window, participation is mandatory thereafter, and the rate on attributed orders is 12% instead of 15%, capped at $100 per order. The fee still applies only to orders where a buyer clicked an Offsite Ad and ordered within 30 days. Confirm the exact wording on Etsy’s Offsite Ads help article.
Does offering free shipping reduce my Etsy fees?
No. Both the 6.5% transaction fee and the 3% processing fee are charged on item plus shipping, so a $55 item with free shipping and a $50 item with $5 shipping have the same $55 fee base and the same $5.48 in order-side fees. Free shipping is a pricing and presentation choice, not a fee reduction. Any effect on search placement is outside this page. For contrast, see Poshmark seller fees (20% on item only), where shipping is outside the fee base.
Is there any way to avoid the $0.20 listing fee?
Not on Etsy’s published schedule. It is charged each time a listing is published or renewed, and editing a live listing is free. It is the only Etsy fee that does not scale with price, so on a $55 order it is 0.36% of the sale. Renewal and auto-renew settings are not described here; check Etsy’s Help pages.
