How to lower Whatnot commission: climb the 4-week sales ladder Whatnot publishes
Whatnot’s US commission starts at 8% of the item price (4% for Coins) and falls by tier as your combined item sales across all categories in a 4-week period, also called gross merchandise value (GMV), reach $15,000 and up. There is no setting, plan or subscription that lowers it: the lever is climbing the ladder.
Whatnot fee data checked 2026-10-26 in the Feebrief fee data set and re-checked 2026-11-01 against Whatnot’s seller fees help article (support stamp October 30, 2026). The tiered structure described here took effect for existing sellers on September 21, 2026. Rates shown are for US sellers in USD.

Scope: this page covers only what Whatnot publishes: the commission ladder by 4-week sales and vertical, what the commission is charged on, the separate processing fee, and the Premier Shop change. It does not cover tax, accounting, non-US markets or anything that would move a sale off Whatnot. Feebrief is not affiliated with Whatnot and is not an official calculator; see the Feebrief disclosure.
Short answer: Whatnot commission falls by volume tier, not by a setting
Whatnot commission in the US starts at 8% of the item price, or 4% for Coins. It falls when your combined item sales across all categories in a 4-week period reach $15,000, $35,000, $50,000, $100,000, $250,000 and $500,000, and the tier you unlock applies to the following period (Whatnot seller fees help article). Payment processing of 2.9% + $0.30 is a separate line that does not change with tier.
The period in which you first pass $15,000 is still charged at the Standard rate; the lower rate starts in the next 4-week period.
For contrast, how to reduce eBay seller fees is a subscription with a break-even, while Whatnot’s is a volume ladder with no subscription.
Your baseline: a $50 fashion item at the Standard rate (US, as of Oct 2026)
| Line | Base | Rate | Amount |
|---|---|---|---|
| Commission | $50.00 item | 8% | $4.00 |
| Payment processing | $55.00 buyer total | 2.9% + $0.30 | $1.90 |
| Total fees | $5.90 | ||
| Seller receives before own costs | of $55.00 collected | $49.10 |
Assumptions: US seller, Fashion vertical, Standard tier, $5 buyer-paid shipping, $0 sales tax, no refunds or cancellations. Processing is shown on item plus buyer-paid shipping; on a real order it also applies to any sales tax collected. Each fee is rounded half-up to the cent per order; Whatnot’s live rounding may differ by a cent. See how Feebrief estimates seller fees.
The two fees together are about 11.8% of the $50 item price, or about 10.7% of the $55 the buyer paid. Match whichever you compare to a payout; neither is “the Whatnot fee” on its own.
The one lever: your combined item sales over 4 weeks
Whatnot adds up the item sale prices of completed orders across all categories over a 4-week (28-day) period. The tier that total reaches sets the commission rate for the next period, and the rate is locked for the full period (Whatnot seller fees help article, fetched 2026-11-01).
- Standard: $0 to $14,999
- Tier 1: $15,000 to $34,999
- Tier 2: $35,000 to $49,999
- Tier 3: $50,000 to $99,999
- Tier 4: $100,000 to $249,999
- Tier 5: $250,000 to $499,999
- Tier 6: $500,000 and above
The same $50 sale at every Fashion tier
| Tier (previous period’s combined item sales) | Fashion rate | Commission on $50 | Processing on $55 | Fees | Received of $55 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Standard $0 to $14,999 | 8.00% | $4.00 | $1.90 | $5.90 | $49.10 |
| Tier 1 $15,000 to $34,999 | 7.00% | $3.50 | $1.90 | $5.40 | $49.60 |
| Tier 2 $35,000 to $49,999 | 6.50% | $3.25 | $1.90 | $5.15 | $49.85 |
| Tier 3 $50,000 to $99,999 | 5.50% | $2.75 | $1.90 | $4.65 | $50.35 |
| Tier 4 $100,000 to $249,999 | 5.00% | $2.50 | $1.90 | $4.40 | $50.60 |
| Tier 5 $250,000 to $499,999 | 4.50% | $2.25 | $1.90 | $4.15 | $50.85 |
| Tier 6 $500,000 and above | 4.50% | $2.25 | $1.90 | $4.15 | $50.85 |
Processing is the same at every tier because it is 2.9% + $0.30 of the buyer’s total and does not change with volume. Received is $55.00 minus fees, before your own shipping and product costs.
The full US ladder by vertical
Whatnot publishes one US table with six verticals and seven tiers. The rates below are that table as of October 30, 2026. Whatnot’s “as low as 3%” refers to custom rates for its highest-volume sellers who work with an account manager; it is not a tier you can reach by sales volume alone.
| Vertical | Standard $0 to $14,999 | Tier 1 $15,000 to $34,999 | Tier 2 $35,000 to $49,999 | Tier 3 $50,000 to $99,999 | Tier 4 $100,000 to $249,999 | Tier 5 $250,000 to $499,999 | Tier 6 $500,000 and above |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fashion | 8.00% | 7.00% | 6.50% | 5.50% | 5.00% | 4.50% | 4.50% |
| Other Collectibles | 8.00% | 7.25% | 6.50% | 6.00% | 5.00% | 5.00% | 5.00% |
| Other | 8.00% | 7.00% | 6.50% | 5.50% | 4.00% | 4.00% | 4.00% |
| Sports | 8.00% | 7.75% | 7.50% | 7.25% | 7.00% | 6.75% | 6.50% |

| Coins | 4.00% | 3.90% | 3.80% | 3.70% | 3.60% | 3.55% | 3.50% |
Lowest public cells: Fashion 4.50% (from Tier 5), Other 4.00% (from Tier 4), Other Collectibles 5.00% (from Tier 4), Sports and TCG 6.50% (Tier 6), Coins 3.50% (Tier 6). Source: Whatnot seller fees help article, United States table, support stamp October 30, 2026, fetched 2026-11-01.
What the Fashion ladder means per $10,000 of item sales
| Rate in force | Commission per $10,000 of item sales |
|---|---|
| 8.00% | $800 |
| 7.00% | $700 |
| 6.50% | $650 |
| 5.50% | $550 |
| 5.00% | $500 |
| 4.50% | $450 |
When the lower rate actually starts: the next 4-week period
The tier your sales unlock applies to the following 4-week period and is locked for that period. The example assumes sales hold at the same level in both periods; it is not a forecast.
| Period | Combined item sales | Rate in force | Why | Commission |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Period A | $20,000 | 8.00% (Standard) | Rate was set by the period before A, which was under $15,000 | $1,600 |
| Period B | $20,000 | 7.00% (Tier 1) | Period A’s $20,000 unlocked Tier 1 for B; locked for all of B | $1,400 |
The saving appears one period late and only if sales hold; $20,000 is an illustration, not a typical figure. What happens to the rate when a later period comes in lower is described in the help article; read it live before relying on it.
Your vertical sets your ladder, so categorise accurately
At Tier 3 the published rates differ by vertical, which changes the commission on a $100 item:
| Vertical | Tier 3 rate | Commission on $100 item |
|---|---|---|
| Fashion | 5.50% | $5.50 |
| Other Collectibles | 6.00% | $6.00 |
| Other | 5.50% | $5.50 |
| Sports | 7.25% | $7.25 |
| trading card game (TCG) | 7.25% | $7.25 |
| Coins | 3.70% | $3.70 |
The vertical is set by what the item is and how it is categorised on Whatnot, not by the seller’s preference. Feebrief’s fee data notes that live-show category and marketplace product category can yield different rates on the same account; confirm how that is resolved on the help article. This page does not suggest listing an item in a vertical it does not belong to.
Shipping and tax are outside the commission, inside the processing fee
Whatnot calculates commission on item GMV only; buyer-paid shipping and taxes are outside it. Processing is 2.9% + $0.30 on the buyer’s full total, including shipping and any tax (Whatnot seller fees help article).
| Order | Commission base | Commission 8% | Processing base | Processing 2.9% + $0.30 | Fees | Received of total collected |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| $50 item + $0 shipping | $50.00 | $4.00 | $50.00 | $1.75 | $5.75 | $44.25 of $50.00 |
| $50 item + $5 buyer-paid shipping | $50.00 | $4.00 | $55.00 | $1.90 | $5.90 | $49.10 of $55.00 |
| $55 item + $0 shipping | $55.00 | $4.40 | $55.00 | $1.90 | $6.30 | $48.70 of $55.00 |
The $5 of shipping adds about $0.15 of processing and $0.00 of commission; folding the same $5 into the item price adds $0.40 of commission. The estimator has no tax input, so its processing figure can run a little low on orders with tax. Nothing here is a recommendation about how to price shipping; it describes which base each fee uses.
For the live contrast between a shipping-inclusive fee base and an item-only commission base, see eBay vs Whatnot fees; for another item-only base, Poshmark seller fees (20% on item only).
What no longer lowers it, and what never did
- Premier Shop: as of November 1, 2026, the help article says Premier Shop no longer includes a 10% commission discount in markets with tiered rates.
- Processing: 2.9% + $0.30 on the buyer total is fixed and separate from commission.
- Subscriptions and plans: none is published that lowers commission.
- “As low as 3%”: custom rates for the highest-volume sellers with account managers, not a public tier.
For an optional fee a seller can leave off, in contrast to a commission with no switch, see Depop Boost fee explained.
Run your own numbers in the Feebrief Whatnot estimator
The live Feebrief Whatnot seller fee estimator has three category rows: Standard 8%, Coins 4% and Fashion Tier 6 at 4.5%. It stacks 2.9% + $0.30 processing on item plus buyer-paid shipping, has no tax input and does not check your 4-week volume. For an intermediate tier, apply that tier’s rate from the ladder above to the item price by hand and keep the processing line unchanged. For method, see how Feebrief estimates seller fees.
Feebrief’s interactive fee comparer covers eBay, Poshmark, Mercari, Depop, Vinted and Whatnot only. The tables on this page are static worked examples from Whatnot’s published table.

Whatnot commission FAQ
Does Whatnot charge commission on shipping?
No. Whatnot’s commission is calculated on the item sale price only; buyer-paid shipping and taxes are outside it. Payment processing is different: 2.9% + $0.30 is charged on the buyer’s full total, including shipping and any tax collected. On a $50 fashion item with $5 shipping that is $4.00 of commission and about $1.90 of processing at the Standard rate.
When does a lower Whatnot commission tier start?
In the 4-week period after you unlock it. Whatnot adds up the item sale prices of your completed orders across all categories over a 4-week period; the tier that total reaches sets your commission rate for the next period, and the rate is locked for that whole period. The period in which you first pass $15,000 is still charged at the Standard rate. Read Whatnot’s help article for what happens if a later period comes in lower.
Is there a 3% Whatnot commission?
Not on the public ladder. The help article describes rates “as low as 3%” as custom arrangements for the highest-volume sellers who work with an account manager. The lowest published US rates are 4.5% for Fashion from Tier 5 ($250,000 of 4-week sales), 4% for Other from Tier 4 ($100,000), and 3.5% for Coins at Tier 6 ($500,000). Sports and trading card game (TCG) bottom out at 6.5%.
