Grailed vs Mercari Fees: What Each Really Takes

One jacket, two apps, two very different bills. Grailed's cut splits at a cliff: 6% commission with a $1.99 minimum under $120, then 9% at $120 and up (sales on or after 2026-05-20), plus Stripe processing at 3.49% + $0.49. Mercari charges a single line — a flat 10% of the item price plus buyer-paid shipping (listings created on or after 2026-01-06), processing included. Below, the same item runs through both stacks at $60, $100 and $150, and the bands where each platform keeps more of your money are mapped: a ~$96 crossover, a $120 cliff, and a $1.99 floor that punishes cheap listings.

Quick answer: it depends on your price band

Neither platform wins at every price. Below ~$96, Mercari's flat 10% usually edges out Grailed's combined stack; between ~$96 and $119, Grailed is slightly cheaper; at $120 and up, Grailed's 9% tier takes over and Mercari is clearly cheaper — all before label costs, which vary on both. Fees are only half the decision: Grailed's streetwear and designer depth (see Grailed seller fees) suits curated pieces, while Mercari's general resale breadth moves everyday items.

How Grailed charges sellers

Commission tiers and the $1.99 floor

Listing on Grailed is free. For sales on or after 2026-05-20, the commission is 6% with a $1.99 minimum when the sale price is under $120, and 9% at $120 and up — the 9% applies to the whole price, not just the portion above $120. That minimum is what makes cheap listings costlier than "6%" suggests: 6% of the price falls below $1.99 once the listing price drops under ≈$33.17, so a $25 sale and a $33 sale both pay $1.99 in commission. The under-$120 mechanics are unpacked in Grailed fees under $120.

What the commission applies to

The base depends on how the item ships. Sold with a Grailed Label, commission is charged on the listing price alone. Sold without one, it's the listing price plus buyer-charged shipping. The price of a Grailed Label itself is not publicly available — Feebrief won't invent one, but it is a real cost to weigh when a label is used.

Payment processing is a separate line

On top of commission, Stripe-onboarded sellers on US domestic transactions pay 3.49% + $0.49, charged on the whole transaction total — shipping and tax included. The commission and the processing fee therefore don't even share a base. The full stack is broken out on the Grailed payment processing fee page.

Worked examples: $100 and $150

Grailed seller fees at $100 and $150, Grailed Label, sales tax $0, shipping $0. United States, USD
Line$100 sale (Label, tax $0)$150 sale (Label)
Commission (6% / 9%)$6.00$13.50
Processing (3.49% + $0.49)$3.98~$5.73
Total fees$9.98≈$19.23
You keep$90.02≈$130.77

Two things stand out. At $100, the whole Grailed stack is 9.98% of the sale — almost exactly Mercari's 10%. At $150, the cliff is visible in one row: commission alone jumps from $6.00 to $13.50 because 9% replaces 6%, before processing is even counted.

How Mercari charges sellers

One flat 10%

For listings created on or after 2026-01-06, Mercari charges a flat 10% selling fee on the item price plus buyer-paid shipping. Listing is free, and payment processing is included for the seller — there is no second line to calculate. Mercari's Seller Tiers program, which once adjusted rates, was a beta and has ended; no tier discounts apply.

What isn't in the 10%

The shipping label cost isn't — it varies by service and weight and is deducted when a label is used. Instant Pay, at $3, is an optional faster-cash-out feature, not a default deduction from take-home.

The buyer's side

Mercari charges buyers a Buyer Protection fee of ~3.6%. It is buyer-paid, not a seller fee — but it shapes how buyers size their offers, so it can indirectly affect the prices sellers negotiate.

Worked examples: $100 with and without shipping

Mercari seller fees on a $100 item with $0 and $8 buyer-paid shipping. United States, USD
Line$100 + $0 shipping$100 + $8 shipping
Fee base (item + buyer-paid shipping)$100$108
Selling fee (10%)$10.00$10.80
You keep$90.00$97.20 of $108

Both nets are before label cost. The second row shows the fee-base asymmetry in action: buyer-paid shipping rides into Mercari's 10%, so an $8 shipping charge costs the seller $0.80. United States, USD; rates as dated above. The asymmetry that matters most: Mercari's 10% always includes buyer-paid shipping in its base, while a Grailed Label keeps shipping out of the commission — though never out of processing, which covers shipping and tax regardless.

Same item at $60, $100 and $150

Assumptions used in all three tables: the Grailed sale ships with a Grailed Label; sales tax is $0; buyer-charged shipping is $0 on Grailed; the Mercari buyer pays $0 shipping — so both fee bases are the item price alone. Label costs are excluded on both sides because they vary, and Grailed's label price is not publicly available. Every figure is base × rate, worked line by line.

$60 item

Fees on a $60 sale: Grailed Label vs Mercari with $0 shipping
LineGrailedMercari
Commission / selling fee$3.60 (6%, above the $1.99 floor)$6.00 (10%)
Processing$2.58 (3.49% + $0.49)Included
Total fees$6.18$6.00
You keep$53.82$54.00 before label

Mercari by $0.18. Grailed's effective rate here is ~10.3%: the $0.49 fixed processing piece weighs heavily at low prices, more than wiping out the cheaper 6% commission.

$100 item

Fees on a $100 sale: Grailed Label vs Mercari with $0 shipping

Commission / selling fee$6.00 (6%)$10.00 (10%)
Processing$3.98Included
Total fees$9.98$10.00
You keep$90.02$90.00 before label

A $0.02 tie, in Grailed's favor. This is the crossover neighborhood (~$96) made concrete: at $100 the two stacks are indistinguishable.

$150 item

Fees on a $150 sale: Grailed Label vs Mercari with $0 shipping
LineGrailedMercari
Commission / selling fee$13.50 (9%)$15.00 (10%)
Processing~$5.73Included
Total fees≈$19.23$15.00
You keep≈$130.77$135.00 before label

Mercari by ≈$4.23. Past the $120 cliff, Grailed's effective rate climbs to ~12.8% while Mercari's stays at 10% flat.

The verdict zigzags: Mercari at $60, a dead heat at $100, Mercari again at $150 — and the pattern holds between those points. One caveat before generalizing: without a Grailed Label, the Grailed commission base expands to include buyer-charged shipping, and any buyer-paid shipping on Mercari expands that side's base too. Recompute for your actual shipping arrangement before trusting any single row.

When each platform is cheaper

Below ~$96: Mercari, slightly. Under $120 with a Grailed Label and $0 tax, Grailed's stack works out to ≈9.49% + $0.49. Set that against a flat 10% and the fixed $0.49 is covered by the 0.51-point rate gap only once the item price reaches about $96 ($0.49 ÷ 0.0051 ≈ $96). Below that, the fixed piece makes Grailed the costlier stack.

$96 to $119: Grailed, barely. The 6% commission plus processing undercuts 10% by pennies — $0.02 at $100 — and the margin widens slowly toward $119.

$120 and up: Mercari, clearly. Grailed's stack becomes ≈12.49% + $0.49, so the gap widens with price — roughly $4.23 at $150 and growing from there.

The shipping scenario flips the bases. A no-Label Grailed sale adds buyer-charged shipping to the commission base, while Mercari's 10% always rides on buyer-paid shipping. Whichever platform keeps shipping out of the fee base — Grailed with a Label — gains an edge that grows with the shipping charge. Label costs, which vary on both platforms, sit outside all of these figures, and Grailed's label price is not publicly available.

Streetwear depth vs general resale

Under $120, Grailed often carries the lower commission rate — but its Stripe cents stack hardest on cheap items, which is why the band rule flips at ~$96. Mercari's single 10% line is simpler and predictable at every price. That trade — a lower percentage with more moving parts vs one flat number — is the whole fee story of this pair.

Fees shouldn't be the entire decision. Grailed's catalog is streetwear, designer, sneakers and vintage: buyers there are often hunting exactly those categories and may pay stronger prices for the right piece. Mercari's breadth fits everyday goods with no fashion-literate audience. Run the band rule on your expected price first, then pick the audience that matches the item. Straight answers

Does Grailed charge commission on shipping?

With a Grailed Label, no — commission applies to the listing price alone. Without a Label, buyer-charged shipping is added to the commission base. Processing at 3.49% + $0.49 covers shipping and tax in either case.

Is there a minimum commission on Grailed?

Yes: $1.99 on sales under $120 (6% rate, sales on or after 2026-05-20). The floor binds once the listing price is below ≈$33.17, so very cheap items effectively pay more than 6%.

Which is cheaper on a $150 sale?

Mercari. Its fee is $15.00 against Grailed's ≈$19.23 (9% commission plus ~$5.73 processing) — a difference of ≈$4.23 before label costs, which vary.

Does Mercari charge payment processing on top of the 10%?

No. Processing is included for the seller. Instant Pay at $3 is optional, and Buyer Protection at ~3.6% is paid by the buyer, not the seller.

Do Mercari Seller Tiers still change rates?

No. Seller Tiers was a beta and has ended. The current structure is a flat 10% on item plus buyer-paid shipping for listings created on or after 2026-01-06.
