Mercari Fees Explained: What Sellers and Buyers Pay
Mercari charges sellers 10% of the item price plus buyer-paid shipping — and that single line is the whole seller-side stack at sale time, because listing is free and seller payment processing is included. Buyer Protection (~3.6% of item plus shipping) is paid by the buyer, not you; the table below stacks every fee line with who pays it, and a worked $50 example shows the arithmetic.
Fee lines checked 2026-10-23 in the Feebrief fee data set (fees.json, Mercari record article/169) and 2026-11-01 against Mercari help-center article 6004. Last updated . Rates shown are for the United States in USD.
The full Mercari fee hub — where the live estimator lives — is the separate Feebrief Mercari fee hub at /mercari/. Feebrief has no live calculator embedded on this doorway page — no input, no form — every figure below is a worked example from the sourced fee lines.
Scope: US / USD only, whole fee stack, who pays each line. The deep dives live on the spokes: does Mercari charge a listing fee, the Instant Pay fee, and payout timing, all under the resale marketplace fees hub. Mercari fees at a glance: who pays what
Seven lines, two columns. This is the who-pays stack that single-number explainers compress away:
| Fee | Amount | Who pays | As of |
|---|---|---|---|
| Listing | Free — $0 | Seller (nothing) | 2026-10-23 |
| Selling fee | 10% of item price + buyer-paid shipping | Seller | 2026-10-23 |
| Seller processing | Included — no separate line | Seller (nothing extra) | 2026-10-23 |
| Buyer Protection | ~3.6% of item + shipping | Buyer | 2026-10-23 |
| Instant Pay (optional) | $3 flat | Seller (optional) | 2026-11-01 |
| Direct Deposit (successful) | $0 | Seller | 2026-11-01 |
| Failed Direct Deposit | $2 non-refundable | Seller | 2026-11-01 |
In one sentence: Mercari takes 10% of the item price plus buyer-paid shipping; listing is free; Buyer Protection (~3.6%) is paid by the buyer. Two of the seven lines are seller choices (the $3 Instant Pay is optional; Direct Deposit is the free default path), and one — Buyer Protection — never touches seller proceeds at all.
Source of record: the Feebrief fee data set (fees.json, Mercari record article/169, as of 2026-10-23) for the listing, selling-fee, processing, and Buyer Protection lines; Mercari help-center article 6004 (as of 2026-11-01) for Instant Pay and Direct Deposit. How Feebrief sources and dates fee facts: methodology.
The selling fee — 10% and what it applies to
The selling fee is 10% of the item price plus any buyer-paid shipping — one percentage, one line, charged when the sale completes. A basis sentence so the base is unambiguous: on a $40 item with $6 buyer-paid shipping, the fee base is $46 and the selling fee is $4.60; with no buyer-paid shipping, the base is the item price alone. Seller payment processing sits inside this 10% (see below), so there is no second seller-side percentage to add.
Effective-date wording is quoted as sourced, not reconciled: the Feebrief fee data set (fees.json, as of 2026-10-23) records the structure as effective January 6, 2025, and notes the selling fee applies to listings created or updated on or after January 6, 2026. This page states both dates exactly as recorded and interprets neither.
Listing on Mercari is free
Listing costs nothing: $0 to post an item, $0 whether it sells or doesn't. There is no per-listing charge and no insertion allowance to track, so the only number that affects your proceeds is the 10% selling fee above. The full yes/no treatment — wording, edge cases, and sourcing — is on does Mercari charge a listing fee?
Seller processing is included
There is no separate seller-side processing fee on Mercari: payment processing is included in the 10% selling fee. Some marketplaces bill processing as its own seller line; Mercari does not, which means there is no second percentage to stack when you estimate a payout. This page deliberately quotes no standalone processing rate, because none is published — the "included" line in the table above is the whole story.
Buyer Protection is buyer-paid (~3.6%)
Buyer Protection is ~3.6% of the item price plus shipping, and the buyer pays it — it is a buyer-side charge, not a deduction from your payout. Keep the "~" attached: the rate is approximate in the source of record (fees.json caveats, as of 2026-10-23), so treat 3.6% as approximate, not exact. Sellers should not double-count it in net math: it never comes out of seller proceeds, so it has no place in a "what will I keep" calculation.
Getting paid: Instant Pay $3 vs free Direct Deposit
Instant Pay (optional): $3 flat per payout — typically minutes, up to 30 minutes — capped at $600 per month and available once per day. The full mechanics are on the Mercari Instant Pay fee explained.
Direct Deposit (the standard path): $0 for successful withdrawals (the no-fee wording effective January 6, 2025 2:00 PM PT, per help-center article 6004) — and $2, non-refundable, if a deposit is rejected or fails. How long a deposit actually takes is its own topic: Mercari payout time explained.
Worked example — $50 item, $5 shipping
The full stack on one sale, arithmetic shown (sourced line: the 10% selling fee, fees.json as of 2026-10-23; United States, USD):
| Line | Amount |
|---|---|
| Item price | $50.00 |
| Buyer-paid shipping | $5.00 |
| Fee base | $55.00 |
| Selling fee (10% × $55) | −$5.50 |
| Seller proceeds before any label cost | $49.50 |
| …via optional Instant Pay ($3) | $46.50 |
| …via successful Direct Deposit ($0) | $49.50 |
Two cautions on reading that number. First, $49.50 is before any label cost — whatever shipping arrangement you ship under is a separate cost, not a fee line quoted here. Second, the buyer's side of the same sale is $55 plus Buyer Protection at ~3.6% of $55 (about $1.98), collected from the buyer — which is exactly why it does not reduce your $49.50.
What Mercari doesn't charge
Three negatives, stated plainly. Listing is $0 — no posting fee, ever. There is no separate seller processing line — it is inside the 10%. And Mercari's Seller Tiers — a beta program — has ended: no tier discounts apply to the current published structure, and Feebrief quotes none because none are published. If a charge is not in the stack table above, it is not part of the published US seller fee stack.
Mercari fee FAQ
How much does Mercari take?
10% of the item price plus buyer-paid shipping — nothing else seller-side at sale time, since listing is free and processing is included. The stack table above shows every line; the hub with the live estimator is the Feebrief Mercari fee hub.
Is listing on Mercari free?
Yes — $0 to list, $0 if the item never sells. The yes/no deep dive is does Mercari charge a listing fee?
Who pays Mercari Buyer Protection?
The buyer — ~3.6% of item plus shipping on the buyer's side, approximate per the source of record. It never reduces seller proceeds, so leave it out of your net math.
Is Instant Pay worth the $3?
That is a speed-vs-cost call: $3 flat for typically-minutes cash (up to 30 minutes, $600/month cap, once per day) versus $0 for a successful Direct Deposit. The trade-offs are worked through on the Instant Pay fee page and the payout-time page.
What does Mercari take on a $50 sale?
With $5 buyer-paid shipping: 10% × $55 = $5.50, so you keep $49.50 before any label cost. The full arithmetic, including the Instant Pay and Direct Deposit rows, is in the worked example above.
