Mercari payout time: Instant Pay vs Direct Deposit
Money doesn't move the moment a Mercari sale closes. First the buyer gets 72 hours after delivery to confirm and rate — and if that window passes in silence, Mercari steps in with an automatic 5-star rating so the transaction completes and your earnings drop into your Mercari balance. From there you pick a cash-out rail: a $3 Instant Pay that typically lands within minutes (it may take up to 30 minutes depending on your bank), or a no-fee ACH direct deposit that typically arrives within 5 business days — Mercari's How It Works guide frames the same rail as 5–7, and this page quotes both.
Every timing figure on this page was checked against three Mercari Help Center sources: article 6004 (Getting paid: Direct Deposit, Instant Pay, and payout issues), article 169 (Fees on Mercari), and the How It Works guide. Written for the US Mercari marketplace, in US dollars — Mercari Japan runs different schedules. United States, USD. Last updated .
Feebrief is not affiliated with Mercari, and there's no payout calculator or calendar embedded on this page — actual timing turns on the delivery scan, whether and when the buyer rates, and your bank's posting schedule, none of which a widget can compute. What follows is Mercari's published timing rules, hedges intact. For the full fee picture, the Mercari selling fee guide is a separate page.
Mercari payout timing at a glance
Two clocks, then a choice. Clock one: the buyer has 72 hours after delivery to rate; no rating means Mercari auto-rates 5 stars after 3 days, and funds unlock to your Mercari balance either way. Clock two: getting that balance to your bank. Instant Pay costs $3 and is typically done within minutes, possibly up to 30 minutes depending on your bank. Direct deposit is free on success and typically arrives within 5 business days — with Mercari's How It Works guide alternatively saying typically received within 5–7 business days. Both rails can be used once per day.
Where the 72 hours starts: delivered, not shipped
The first clock has nothing to do with your ship date — it begins when the carrier scans your package as delivered. From that moment the buyer has 72 hours to review the order, confirm it's as described, and rate it, per Mercari Help Center article 6004. Once the buyer rates, funds are released and appear in your Mercari account as balance. Until a rating happens — theirs or Mercari's — the money stays locked.
Silence has a deadline too. If the buyer doesn't rate after 3 days, Mercari automatically assigns a 5-star rating, the transaction completes, and you get paid, per the How It Works guide. So the worst case on this leg is the full 72 hours of waiting, not an indefinite hold: a quiet buyer slows your payout but can't stall it forever.
Two ways out of your balance: Instant Pay ($3) or direct deposit (free on success)
Once earnings sit in your Mercari balance, the two rails trade cost for speed. Instant Pay pushes money to an eligible debit card for a $3 flat fee, typically arriving within minutes. ACH direct deposit costs nothing when it succeeds and typically arrives within 5 business days — the How It Works guide phrases the same rail as typically received within 5–7 business days. The side-by-side, built from article 6004 and article 169:
| Cash-out rail | Instant Pay | Direct deposit (ACH) |
|---|---|---|
| Fee per cash-out | $3 flat | None on success; $2 non-refundable if the request is rejected or fails |
| Typical arrival | Typically within minutes; may take up to 30 minutes depending on your bank | Typically within 5 business days (How It Works: typically received within 5–7 business days) |
| Processing rhythm | Sent to your eligible debit card | Processed the following business day; after processing, funds can take up to 5 business days to appear — Monday–Friday, excluding bank and Mercari-recognized holidays |
| How often | Once per day | Once per day |
| What you need | Government ID verification, eligible Visa or Mastercard debit card (not all prepaid cards qualify), latest Mercari app | A linked checking account for the ACH withdrawal |

Inside Instant Pay: $3 flat, minute-scale arrivals, once a day, $600 a month
Instant Pay is the paid fast lane, and its constraints stack. The fee is a $3 flat charge per cash-out; arrival is typically within minutes, though it may take up to 30 minutes depending on your bank. Eligibility requires government ID verification and an eligible Visa or Mastercard debit card — not all prepaid cards qualify — and the feature lives only in the latest version of the Mercari app. Usage limits: once per day, up to $600 per month.
One softener worth knowing: if an Instant Pay request is declined, the withdrawal amount including the $3 fee returns to your balance; if your bank rejects it for certain bank-related reasons, it comes back excluding the $3 fee. The fast lane is fast, but it isn't unconditional.
Inside direct deposit: no fee when it succeeds, business days when it moves
Direct deposit is the free default. Successful withdrawals carry no fee — a dated fact: Mercari ended its old $2-per-cash-out charge effective January 6, 2025, 2:00 PM PT. The trade is patience, measured in business days. Requests are processed the following business day, and after processing, funds can take up to 5 business days to appear. The Getting Paid article sums up the rail as typically arriving within 5 business days; the How It Works guide says typically received within 5–7 business days. We quote both because Mercari prints both.
"Business days" means Monday through Friday, excluding bank holidays and Mercari-recognized holidays — so a Friday-evening request typically starts moving Monday at the earliest. And the fee isn't entirely gone: a rejected or failed direct deposit request still incurs a $2 non-refundable fee. Double-check the account and routing numbers before withdrawing.
One line on the selling fee
Separate from payout timing, Mercari's selling fee is 10% of the item price plus buyer-paid shipping; the full breakdown lives in the Mercari selling fee guide, and nothing else on this page restates it.
Why no honest page can circle an exact date
Because three independent calendars have to line up. The delivery scan sets day zero. The buyer may rate within the hour or sit silent until the 3-day auto-rating completes the sale. Your direct deposit request is then processed the following business day, and after processing, funds can take up to 5 business days to post — business days that skip weekends, bank holidays, and Mercari-recognized holidays.
Stack every published maximum and the free rail can legitimately run to roughly nine business days from the delivery scan to money in your bank. That ceiling is our own addition of Mercari's separately published windows — Mercari prints no delivery-to-bank total, so treat it as planning math, not a quote. Any page promising "money on day X" is inventing the one number Mercari never published.

Mercari payout questions, answered
Does the 72-hour clock start when I ship or when the item is delivered?
At delivery. Under Mercari Help Center article 6004, the buyer has 72 hours after the item is delivered to review the order, confirm it matches the listing, and rate it. Shipping only matters because nothing starts until the package arrives — the carrier's delivered scan is what begins the 72 hours.
My buyer went quiet — do I still get paid?
Yes. If the buyer doesn't rate within 3 days of delivery, Mercari automatically gives the transaction a 5-star rating, which completes it, and your earnings are released to your Mercari balance. A silent buyer can slow the release by those days, but can't stop it.
What does Mercari Instant Pay cost, and when do funds usually land?
A $3 flat fee per cash-out, with funds typically available within minutes — it may take up to 30 minutes depending on your bank. To use it you need government ID verification, an eligible Visa or Mastercard debit card (not all prepaid cards qualify), and the latest version of the Mercari app. Instant Pay runs once per day and is capped at $600 per month.
Does a successful direct deposit cost anything?
No. Successful withdrawals are free — and have been since January 6, 2025, 2:00 PM PT, when Mercari ended its old $2 charge per cash-out. The one exception: a rejected or failed direct deposit request still carries a $2 non-refundable fee, so a wrong account or routing number costs real money.
Do weekends and holidays pause the direct deposit timeline?
Yes. Direct deposit requests are processed Monday–Friday, excluding bank holidays and Mercari-recognized holidays; after processing, funds can take up to 5 business days to appear. A request placed Friday night typically doesn't begin processing until Monday, which is why identical requests can land on different dates.
Mercari says both "5" and "5–7" business days — which applies?
Both, depending on the page. The Getting Paid help article (6004) says direct deposit funds typically arrive within 5 business days, and separately notes that after a request is processed funds can take up to 5 business days to appear. The How It Works guide says ACH deposits are typically received within 5–7 business days. We quote both windows rather than picking one; for planning, assume the wider range.
