Grailed vs Whatnot fees compared (US)

Under $120, Grailed's 6% commission plus Stripe's 3.49% + $0.49 usually totals less than Whatnot's Standard Fashion entry rate — often 8% of item GMV — plus 2.9% + $0.30 processing. At $120 and up, Grailed's cliff to 9% hands the fee win to Whatnot, and Whatnot's 4-week GMV tiers step commission down toward 4.5% from there. The 30-second answer

Grailed usually wins from roughly $29 to $119; Whatnot usually wins below that and from $120 up. Grailed charges 6% (minimum $1.99) under $120 and 9% at $120 and up, plus Stripe processing at 3.49% + $0.49 — about 9.5% + $0.49 all-in through the middle of the band. Whatnot's Standard Fashion plan often enters at 8% of item GMV with 2.9% + $0.30 processing — about 10.9% + $0.30 — and its 4-week GMV tiers step commission down to 4.5% with volume. One structural caveat up front: Whatnot selling runs on live shows; Grailed listings wait passively.

Read the two base rows before comparing any percentages: the commissions do not share a base with each other, and neither commission shares a base with its own processing fee — that is where most vs comparisons quietly go wrong. Whatnot's exact GMV band edges are published on its fee pages and reproduced in our Whatnot fees explained guide; how Feebrief sources and dates every rate is on the methodology page.

How Grailed fees work

Listing on Grailed is free; the fee event is the sale. Commission is 6% of the sale price with a $1.99 minimum when the item sells under $120, and 9% from $120 up — that schedule applies to sales on or after 2026-05-20, and the 9% applies to the whole price, not just the portion above $120. The base matters: ship with a Grailed Label and commission is charged on the listing price alone; ship your own way and buyer-charged shipping joins the base. Sales tax stays out either way. Payment processing — 3.49% + $0.49 for a Stripe-onboarded US seller, 3.49% + $0.99 without onboarding — rides on the total including shipping and tax. Grailed Label shipping costs are not published on the fee pages used here, so no label price is assumed in any example below.

The full breakdown sits in the Grailed seller fees guide; the under-$120 tier and its minimum-commission floor get a deep dive in Grailed fees under $120; the Stripe line is dissected in Grailed payment processing fees. Feebrief has no live Grailed calculator — these figures are arithmetic, not estimator output.

How Whatnot fees work

Whatnot charges commission on item GMV only — the price the item itself sells for — while buyer shipping and tax stay out of the commission base. Standard Fashion sellers often enter at 8% at the lowest trailing 4-week GMV band, and the ladder steps down to 4.5% at the top band; the exact dollar band edges are published on Whatnot's fee pages and reproduced in the Whatnot fees explained guide, and this page deliberately does not paraphrase them into rounded numbers. Payment processing is 2.9% + $0.30 on the buyer's total — item plus shipping plus tax — which is why a shipping charge moves the processing line but never the commission line.

Two footnotes. The Premier Shop 10% commission discount ended as of 2026-11-01 in tiered markets, so any source still citing it is stale. And features outside the standard flow, such as Early Payout, carry no published fee on the pages used here, so they are excluded from the math. For the total take-rate question, see how much Whatnot takes; the Whatnot hub collects the full ladder.

Head-to-head: the same item on both platforms

Every row is our calculation from the schedules above: no sales tax, no buyer shipping unless stated, Grailed rows assume a Grailed Label and Stripe onboarding, and Whatnot rows assume Standard Fashion at its 8% entry band. Live invoices may land a cent off.

Whatnot, $50 item + $5 buyer shipping$4.00 (8%, item only)≈$1.90 (on $55)≈$5.90≈$49.10, including the $5 shipping

The $120 cliff does the flipping: Grailed wins by $1.22 at $100 and loses by $2.58 at $150, a swing larger than any processing difference. The dual bases matter just as much. On Whatnot, the $5 shipping never touches commission — it stays $4.00 — but lifts processing to ≈$1.90 because the processing base is the full $55 buyer total. On Grailed with a Label, the same sale keeps commission on the listing alone ($3.00) while processing climbs to ≈$2.41, so the $50 band still tilts Grailed by about $0.49. Without a Label, though, Grailed's commission base grows to $55 and the 6% becomes $3.30 — our calculation, and the detail most vs comparisons miss entirely.

Break-even bands: where each platform wins

There is no single crossover number, because Grailed's mechanics change twice. On commission alone, 6% undercuts 8% everywhere under $120 once past the minimum — at $119 Grailed's commission is $7.14 against Whatnot's $9.52 — while at $120 the cliff lands Grailed at $10.80 against Whatnot's $9.60 (our calculation): the cliff, not processing, flips the winner overnight. Below about $33, where 6% of the price stops covering the $1.99 minimum, Grailed's effective commission rate rises above 6%; combined with its $0.49 fixed processing against Whatnot's $0.30, the total-fee crossover sits near $29 with no shipping (again our calculation). From $120 up, Whatnot's edge only widens as trailing 4-week GMV steps the ladder from 8% toward 4.5%.

What fees don't capture

A fee table cannot price your evening. Whatnot selling generally means hosting a live show — scheduling, filming, selling to a room, packing a burst of same-day orders — while a Grailed listing sits passively until a buyer finds it. A 2–3 point commission gap can be smaller than the hourly cost of running shows weekly. Audiences differ too: Whatnot's room bids in the moment; Grailed's streetwear and menswear buyers search and comparison-shop. Barring those differences, the bands above hold.

Grailed vs Whatnot fees: FAQ

Does Grailed or Whatnot charge less?

It depends on the price band. From roughly $29 to $119, Grailed's 6% commission plus Stripe processing usually totals less than Whatnot's 8% entry rate plus processing. At $120 and up, Grailed's 9% loses to Whatnot's 8% entry band — and Whatnot's 4-week GMV tiers can step commission down to 4.5% from there. Below about $29, Whatnot's smaller fixed fees often come out ahead (our calculation, no shipping). The total-take question is covered in how much Whatnot takes.

What is Grailed's minimum commission?

$1.99, on the schedule for sales on or after 2026-05-20. It bites wherever 6% of the sale price falls short — that is, below about $33. A $20 sale pays the $1.99 minimum, an effective commission rate near 10%, before the 3.49% + $0.49 processing line. The under-$120 tier and its floor get a full deep dive.

Does Whatnot commission include shipping?

No. Whatnot commission applies to item GMV only — buyer shipping and tax are excluded. The processing fee, 2.9% + $0.30 in the US, is the line that scales with the buyer's full total of item plus shipping plus tax. Grailed's commission base is listing-only with a Grailed Label; without one, buyer-charged shipping joins Grailed's commission base.

Is the Whatnot Premier Shop discount still active?

No. The 10% Premier Shop commission discount ended as of 2026-11-01 in tiered markets. Standard Fashion commission often enters at 8% and steps down to 4.5% across trailing 4-week GMV bands. Any source still quoting the Premier discount is stale.

Verdict

Pick by price band first, selling mode second. Between roughly $29 and $119, Grailed's 6% plus Stripe is usually the cheaper stack, and the listing can sit and wait for its buyer. At $120 and up, Whatnot's 8% entry — improving toward 4.5% as trailing 4-week GMV climbs — usually wins, if live-show effort suits you. Below about $29, Whatnot's smaller fixed fees often edge it.
