Facebook Marketplace Fees Explained: A Line-by-Line Glossary

Facebook Marketplace fees arrive as four separate lines documented on separate Meta pages: a 10% selling fee on shipped checkout orders, a $0.80 per-order minimum, the cost of the prepaid shipping label, and the lag between shipping and payout. This glossary names each line, defines it in plain English, and traces all four through one $48 order — while on the local pickup path, no Meta selling fee is listed at all.

Facebook Marketplace fee data checked 2026-10-31 against Meta Help, Meta merchant policies and the Meta Onsite Checkout Payments Features Terms (US); the Meta shipping terms page was last updated 2026-08-31. Figures are for US individual sellers. United States, USD.

Quick answer: the fee lines at a glance

Meta’s fee wording is spread across a help article, the merchant policies, the checkout payment terms and the shipping terms — so sellers meet the phrase “selling fee” in one place, the minimum in another, a label deduction in a third and a payout date in a fourth. This table is the whole US glossary in four rows; each line gets its own definition below. For the full local-vs-shipped overview, see the Facebook Marketplace seller fees hub guide — this page goes deeper line by line, not wider.

Sources: Meta Help: selling fees, Meta merchant policies, the Meta Onsite Checkout Payments Features Terms (US) and Meta shipping terms (page last updated 2026-08-31), checked 2026-10-31. Two honesty notes: Meta’s help pages do not carry a single sentence saying local pickup is free, so that row is worded “no selling fee listed”; and the label row deliberately shows no dollar figure, because none is published without a carrier quote.

The selling fee, defined: “10% of total transaction value”

“Selling fee” is Meta’s name for its cut on shipped orders paid through onsite checkout. The rate is 10%, and the base it applies to — the “total transaction value” — is the item price plus shipping plus applicable taxes, per Meta Help, the merchant policies and the Onsite Checkout Payments Features Terms (US).

Two parts of that base surprise sellers. Buyer-paid shipping sits inside it, so the fee on a $40 item with $8 shipping is $4.80 — 10% of the $48 total, but 12% of the item itself. Applicable taxes sit inside it too: with a hypothetical $3.00 tax line the base becomes $51.00 and the fee $5.10. State tax rates are not asserted here. The full mechanics of the base are on the page explaining how the 10% fee base works.

The $0.80 minimum: when it binds

The selling fee is the greater of 10% of the total transaction value or $0.80 per order. Ten percent of $8.00 is exactly $0.80, which makes $8.00 the crossover: on any shipped order under $8.00, 10% would land below the minimum, so $0.80 governs instead. A $5.00 total pays $0.80 — an effective 16% — while at $48.00 the 10% fee of $4.80 clears the floor easily and the minimum never engages.

The $8.00 threshold is our arithmetic derived from Meta’s published greater-of rule, not a number Meta states as a threshold. The minimum applies per order, so ordinary multi-item baskets rarely reach it.

Label cost vs selling fee: two different deductions

The selling fee is Meta’s charge for brokering onsite checkout. The prepaid label is a carrier charge: when you use a Meta shipping label, its cost is deducted from your payout under the Meta shipping terms (last updated 2026-08-31). They are not the same line, and neither includes the other.

The 10% is not charged on the label, and the label cost is not listed in the fee base Meta publishes (item + shipping + applicable taxes). Both deductions land in the same place — your payout — which is why fee statements blur them together. The honest number for a label is: no public fixed dollar without a carrier quote. Treat any page quoting a fixed label price as unverified unless it shows the carrier quote it came from.

Local pickup: the $0 contrast

On the local path — buyer collects, seller is paid in person — no Meta selling fee is listed, and the other fee lines never trigger: there is no label to buy and no payout to wait for, because money changes hands directly. That $0 is the contrast that makes the shipped 10% visible. The glossary entry stops here; the local pickup fees deep dive and the seller fees hub carry the full local-vs-shipped schedule.

Payout lag: fee-adjacent timing, not a fee

Timing shows up on the payout statement next to the fee deductions, but it is not a charge. One hedged line, as Meta words it: payouts are often initiated 15 days after the item is marked shipped, or 5 days after delivery is confirmed, and it can take up to ~20 days for funds to reach your bank. The selling fee and label cost are already deducted by then. A local sale paid in person has no payout wait. The full timing narrative is on the Facebook Marketplace payout times page.

One worked example: $40 item + $8 shipping, $0 tax

A single order threading every glossary line. US individual seller, buyer pays $40.00 for the item and $8.00 shipping through onsite checkout, no sales tax. The chain: fee base $48.00 → fee is the greater of 10% × $48.00 = $4.80 or the $0.80 floor → $4.80 → $43.20 to the seller before the label → prepaid label cost then deducted (no public fixed dollar without a carrier quote), with the payout initiated on the timing above.

Facebook Marketplace $40 item plus $8 shipping traced through every fee line to payout
LineBasisRuleAmount
Total transaction value$40 item + $8 shipping + $0 taxFee base$48.00
Selling fee$48.00Greater of 10% or $0.80$4.80

Prepaid Meta labelCarrier quoteDeducted from payoutNo public fixed dollar
Payout$43.20 − labelTiming aboveOften initiated 15 days after marked shipped, or 5 days after delivery confirmation

Note the fee is $4.80 — 10% of the $48 total but 12% of the $40 item — because buyer-paid shipping sits in the base. For the take-rate view of this same basket, see how much Facebook Marketplace takes; rounding and assumptions follow how Feebrief estimates seller fees.

Facebook Marketplace fees explained FAQ

What fees does Facebook Marketplace charge US sellers?

Two lines on shipped orders paid through onsite checkout: a selling fee of 10% of the total transaction value (item price + shipping + applicable taxes), with a $0.80 minimum per order, and the cost of the prepaid Meta shipping label, which is deducted from the payout. On local pickup paid in person, no Meta selling fee is listed. Figures as of 2026-10-31.

Is local pickup really free on Facebook Marketplace?

As listed, yes on the seller side: Meta publishes no selling fee for local pickup sales where payment is taken in person, and that path has no label cost and no payout wait, because money changes hands directly between buyer and seller. Meta’s help pages do not carry a single sentence promising local sales are free in every configuration, so the honest wording is “no selling fee listed.” The deep dive is on the Facebook Marketplace local pickup fees page.

Does the shipping label count toward the 10% selling fee?

No. The 10% applies to the total transaction value, which Meta lists as item price plus shipping plus applicable taxes; the prepaid label is a separate carrier charge deducted from your payout. The label is neither an add-on percentage nor part of the fee base — two different deductions that both land in the same payout.

When is the fee taken / when do you get paid?

The selling fee and the prepaid label cost are deducted from the order, not billed separately. After that, payouts are often initiated 15 days after the item is marked shipped, or 5 days after delivery is confirmed, and it can take up to ~20 days for funds to reach your bank. A local sale paid in person has no payout wait. The full timing narrative is on the Facebook Marketplace payout times page.

Fee rates, minimums and payout timing change and can vary by account type, location and promotions. Feebrief is independent and not affiliated with or endorsed by Meta or Facebook Marketplace, and this page is not an official calculator. Always check Meta’s official pages and your own payout statement for the amount that will actually be deducted.
