Facebook Marketplace vs eBay fees: $0 local or 10% shipped vs 13.6% + $0.40 per order
On Facebook Marketplace the fee is a choice you make per sale: nothing from Meta for local pickup, 10% when you ship through Meta’s checkout. eBay has one structure, 13.6% plus a per-order fee, whether the item ships or not. This page sets the three paths side by side and works the same item through each.

Short answer: Marketplace is $0 locally and 10% shipped; eBay is 13.6% + $0.40 either way
Sell a $40 item for local pickup on Facebook Marketplace and you keep $40.00 in cash with no Meta selling fee. Ship the same item with $8 buyer-paid shipping through Meta’s onsite checkout and Meta takes 10% of the $48 total, or $4.80, leaving $43.20 before the prepaid label. List it on eBay with the same shipping and eBay takes 13.6% of $48 plus $0.40, or $6.93, leaving $41.07 before the label. If the eBay buyer collects instead, the same arithmetic takes $5.84 and you keep $34.16.
Assumptions: US seller, sales tax $0, eBay’s most-categories rate, no Store or promoted listings. The label is a separate line on both sides and no label dollar amount is assumed.
Facebook Marketplace vs eBay seller fees side by side (US, as of Oct 2026)
| Selling path | Selling fee | Minimum or per-order | Charged on | Shipping label |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Marketplace local, paid in person | $0: no Meta selling fee is listed for payment taken outside onsite checkout | None | Not applicable | None |
| Marketplace shipped, Meta onsite checkout | 10% | $0.80 minimum per order | Total transaction value: item + shipping + applicable taxes | Prepaid Meta label deducted from payout |
| eBay (most categories) | 13.6% final value fee, payment processing included | $0.30 at totals of $10 or less; $0.40 above $10 | Item + shipping | Seller buys label; cost not assumed |
eBay figures come from Feebrief’s fee data (last updated 2026-10-26); Marketplace figures were compiled from Meta’s public pages on 2026-10-31.
What each percentage is charged on
The two percentages sit on different bases, so “10% vs 13.6%” is only part of the picture.
- Meta’s 10% applies to the total transaction value: item + shipping + applicable taxes.
- eBay’s 13.6% applies to item + shipping and already includes payment processing. How eBay treats sales tax is not modeled here; check the eBay fees page.
- Meta’s 10% is also the whole Marketplace fee on the shipped path; the prepaid label is a separate deduction, not a second percentage.
Same shipped sale on both: $40 item + $8 shipping
Basket 1: $40 item, $8 buyer-paid shipping, order total $48.00, sales tax $0, both shipped. Each fee line is rounded half-up to the cent; live invoices may differ by a cent.
| Line | Facebook Marketplace (shipped, Meta checkout) | eBay (most categories) |
|---|---|---|
| Buyer pays | $48.00 | $48.00 |
| Sale percentage | 10% × $48.00 = $4.80 (above the $0.80 minimum) | 13.6% × $48.00 = $6.528, rounded to $6.53 |
| Fixed per-order | None (minimum not binding) | $0.40 (order total above $10) |
| Fees on the order | $4.80 | $6.93 |
| Before label | $43.20 | $41.07 |
| Shipping label | Prepaid Meta label, deducted from payout; a carrier quote, not a fixed dollar | Seller-bought label; a carrier quote, not a fixed dollar |
| Gap before label | Marketplace keeps $2.13 more | |
Cross-check on two more baskets
| Basket | Total | Marketplace fee / before label | eBay fees / net | Gap before label |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| $40 + $8 shipping | $48.00 | $4.80 / $43.20 | $6.93 / $41.07 | $2.13 |
| $40 + $6 shipping | $46.00 | $4.60 / $41.40 | $6.66 / $39.34 | $2.06 |
| $50 + $5 shipping | $55.00 | $5.50 / $49.50 | $7.88 / $47.12 | $2.38 |
The eBay nets of $39.34 and $47.12 are the same ones used on Etsy vs eBay fees, and the $40 + $8 Marketplace figures match Facebook Marketplace seller fees, so the pages agree. The gap grows with order size.
Same item for local pickup: Marketplace $0 vs eBay
| Path | Buyer pays | Fees | Label | Seller keeps | When |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Marketplace local pickup | $40.00 | $0 (no Meta selling fee listed) | None | $40.00 | At handover |
| eBay, buyer collects ($0 shipping) | $40.00 | 13.6% × $40.00 = $5.44 + $0.40 = $5.84 | None | $34.16 | After the sale |
| eBay, shipped ($8 buyer-paid) | $48.00 | $6.93 | Deducted | $41.07 before label | After the sale |
The eBay buyer-collects row applies the same 13.6% + $0.40 to a $40.00 total; we did not model a separate eBay treatment for local collection, so confirm in Seller Hub. On this basket the eBay shipped sale nets $41.07 minus its label cost L, and Marketplace local nets $40.00, so eBay shipped is ahead only while L is under $1.07. That shows why the label line matters; it is not a recommendation, because the buyer pool and time to sell differ between a local and a national listing.
Why the shipped gap is 3.6 points plus $0.40, and where it closes
Both sides include buyer-paid shipping in the base, so for an order total T at or above $8.00 and above $10:
eBay fees = 0.136T + $0.40, Marketplace fees = 0.10T, so eBay costs 0.036T + $0.40 more.
- The gap is positive at every such total. Check on basket 1: 0.036 × $48.00 + $0.40 = $2.13.
- Between $8.00 and $10.00 the same gap uses eBay’s $0.30 per-order fee instead of $0.40.
- Below $8.00, Meta charges its $0.80 minimum while eBay charges 0.136T + $0.30. By our arithmetic the two are equal at $3.68, and eBay is cheaper below that, which only matters on tiny shipped orders.
- Neither side has an attribution or advertising fee in the base case.
The $8 of shipping costs $0.80 on Marketplace and about $1.09 on eBay. Both include shipping in the base, so neither behaves like Poshmark’s item-only rate.
When you get paid: handover, or weeks later on a shipped sale
A local Marketplace sale pays at handover. Per Meta Help, checked 2026-10-31, a shipped Marketplace order pays out like this:
- Payout is often initiated 15 days after the item is marked shipped, or 5 days after delivery is confirmed.
- It can take up to about 20 days in total for funds to reach your bank.
eBay also pays after the sale rather than at handover; this page does not state an eBay payout window. We quote Meta’s triggers as worded and do not compute an average.
Estimate the eBay side live; the Facebook Marketplace side is static
Feebrief’s interactive fee comparer currently covers eBay, Poshmark, Mercari, Depop, Vinted and Whatnot only. The eBay column on this page can be checked live on our eBay seller fees and take-home estimator. Facebook Marketplace is not in that data set, so the Marketplace column is static arithmetic from Meta’s published help and legal pages, not a live Feebrief calculator. See resale marketplace fees compared and how Feebrief estimates seller fees. Examples assume a US individual seller, buyer-paid shipping in both fee bases, no sales tax, eBay’s most-categories final value fee without a Store subscription or promoted listings, and a label shown as a separate line. Feebrief is not affiliated with Meta or eBay; see the Feebrief disclosure.

Facebook Marketplace vs eBay fees FAQ
Is Facebook Marketplace always cheaper than eBay?
In fees, almost always, and locally, entirely. A local sale paid in person has no Meta selling fee listed, so the whole eBay fee ($5.84 on a $40 item with $0 shipping) is the gap. On shipped sales, 10% of the total is below 13.6% + $0.40 at every total of $8.00 and above; the only exception is a shipped total under about $3.68, where Meta’s $0.80 minimum exceeds eBay’s 13.6% + $0.30. On the $40 + $8 basket the pair is $43.20 vs $41.07 before label. Fees are not the only difference: eBay’s buyer pool is national and Marketplace’s local path is not.
Do Facebook Marketplace and eBay both charge fees on shipping and sales tax?
Both include buyer-paid shipping in the percentage base, so the $8 of shipping on the worked basket costs $0.80 on Marketplace and about $1.09 on eBay. Meta defines its base as item plus shipping plus applicable taxes, so sales tax the buyer pays is inside the 10%. How eBay treats sales tax is not modeled here; check the eBay selling fees page. See Poshmark seller fees (20% on item only) for the live counter-example of an item-only base.
Why does eBay charge a fee when the buyer collects in person, and Facebook Marketplace does not?
eBay’s final value fee is worked here on the order total, so a $40 item with $0 shipping comes to 13.6% + $0.40, or $5.84; we did not model a carve-out for buyer-collected items, so confirm the treatment in Seller Hub. On Facebook Marketplace, Meta’s 10% selling fee applies to sales shipped and paid through Meta’s onsite checkout; a local sale paid in person is outside that checkout and no Meta selling fee is listed for it. Use the live eBay estimator for the eBay side and the Meta Help selling fees article for the checkout wording.
