Whatnot vs The RealReal Fees: Live Selling vs Luxury Consignment
Quick answer: these two are not priced the same way, so there is no single fee-for-fee winner. On Whatnot you run the live shows, set prices, ship and pay a commission on item sales (Standard tier often 8% in Fashion and similar categories) plus card processing of 2.9% + $0.30 on the buyer total. At The RealReal you consign, and your payout is a share of the Net Selling Price set by category and price band. This page frames the comparison by who prices, who ships and who authenticates, then runs one $250 clothing example. For the Whatnot side only, see Whatnot fees.
Whatnot figures follow Feebrief’s Whatnot record (page checked 2026-10-30); The RealReal figures follow Feebrief’s RealReal commission record (batch 3, with the site-credit bonus confirmed in a later check). US sellers, USD. Last updated .
Scope: Whatnot (live-selling marketplace) against The RealReal (authenticated consignment). The comparison runs in this direction only; it is not a ThredUp, OfferUp or other RealReal pairing. Feebrief has no RealReal estimator and no calculator is claimed on this page. Feebrief is not affiliated with either company; see the disclosure and how we verify fees.
Two models: who does what
Whatnot is a seller-run channel. You choose what to sell, price it (often through auctions in a live show), photograph or show it, pack it and ship it. Whatnot charges a commission on the item sale and a processing fee. The RealReal is consignment: you send items in, The RealReal authenticates, prices, photographs, lists and ships them, and you receive a share of the Net Selling Price. The first model costs you labor and a fee; the second takes the labor and keeps a larger portion of the sale.
| Job | Whatnot | The RealReal |
|---|---|---|
| Prices the item | You (auction or fixed price) | The RealReal |
| Ships to the buyer | You | The RealReal |
| Authenticates | Not part of the seller fee stack described here | The RealReal, bundled into the consignor share |
| What you pay | Commission on item sales plus card processing | No itemized fee; you receive a share of the Net Selling Price |
| Payout timing | Not compared here (no timing published in Feebrief’s records for this page) | Not compared here (same) |
The Whatnot stack (US)
No listing fee is published for Whatnot. Commission applies to item GMV only (shipping and tax are not in the commission base). For Standard-tier sellers in Fashion, Sports, TCG and Other, the commission is often 8.00%; the exact rate varies by category and by 4-week GMV tier. Payment processing in the US is 2.9% + $0.30 on the buyer total. A Premier Shop 10% discount ended on 2026-11-01 in tiered-rate markets, so do not plan around it, and a custom account-manager rate of “as low as 3%” is not publicly scheduled. Check /whatnot/ for the current record; that estimator covers the Whatnot side only.
The RealReal consignment share (US)
The RealReal pays a seller share: Net Selling Price × the rate for the category and price band. In the Clothing & More Trendsetter schedule recorded by Feebrief, the seller share is:
| Item price band | Seller share |
|---|---|
| $0–$99 | 20% |
| $100–$149 | 30% |
| $150–$199 | 45% |
| $200–$299 | 55% |
| $300–$749 | 60% |
| $750–$4,999 | 65% |
| Over $5,000 | 70% |
Rewards tiers add +1% (Influencer), +2% (Tastemaker) or +5% (VIP) on items of $200 or more for qualifying consignors. Taking payout as site credit adds 5% over cash. Handbags and other categories carry their own band tables, which are Not publicly available in the data this page uses, so no handbag percentages are given. See The RealReal seller commission.
Worked example: one $250 clothing item
Assumptions: Whatnot Standard tier at 8%, item sold at $250 with no shipping or tax in the example; The RealReal Clothing & More Trendsetter band $200–$299, no Rewards bonus. Derived arithmetic is tagged [verify].
| Line | Whatnot | The RealReal |
|---|---|---|
| Commission / share basis | 8% of $250 = $20.00 | 55% seller share of $250 |
| Processing | 2.9% × $250 + $0.30 = $7.55 | None itemized |
| Total taken | $27.55 [verify] | $112.50 retained (45%) [verify] |
| Seller receives | $222.45 before your own shipping cost [verify] | $137.50 [verify] |
The gap is large because the models price different jobs: the Whatnot figure excludes your shipping, packaging and show time, and the consignment figure includes authentication, pricing, photography and fulfillment by The RealReal. Neither figure covers items outside clothing.
When each model tends to fit
This is framing, not advice. Sellers who already run shows, have inventory in categories where Whatnot buyers are active, and want to keep most of each sale accept the labor in exchange for the smaller deduction. Sellers with authenticated luxury pieces who do not want to price, photograph or ship may find the consignment share the price of that service. The numbers above do not include seller shipping on Whatnot, taxes, returns, or any item that does not fit the clothing band used.
Short questions
Is there one fee to compare?
No. Whatnot itemizes commission and processing; The RealReal does not itemize anything, so its cost is the part of the Net Selling Price you do not receive.
Can I get Whatnot’s rate down to 3%?
A custom rate of “as low as 3%” is not publicly scheduled, so Feebrief does not treat it as available.
What about handbags?
Not publicly available in the data used here; check The RealReal’s own Earnings Guide.
