How to Reduce The RealReal Fees (and What You Can't)
You cannot waive The RealReal’s commission chart — there is no negotiation, no seller-side discount, no hack. What you can do is move where your item lands in the chart, stack a loyalty bonus on qualifying sales, and elect site credit for a bigger payout. This page covers the levers that actually move your take, in the order they pay.
The RealReal data checked November 1–2, 2026 in the Feebrief fee data set: sold-price bands from The RealReal’s seller commissions page, Rewards loyalty percentages from the Earnings Guide, and the site-credit +5% election from the site-credit terms, each checked November 1, 2026; the Price Review and early-return fee dig was checked November 2, 2026. Rates shown are for United States consignors on The RealReal’s US marketplace, in USD. Last updated .
Scope: this is the tactics page — keeping more of each consigned sale. It is not the full The RealReal seller commission chart (that lives on the parent page), not the The RealReal fees explained glossary, not how much The RealReal takes from a sale, and not the The RealReal payout time walkthrough; each of those has its own page. Feebrief is not affiliated with The RealReal; see the Feebrief disclosure and how we verify fees.
Quick answer
No — you cannot reduce The RealReal’s commission; the chart is fixed. Three levers still raise your take: land items in higher sold-price bands (your share climbs from 20% up to 70%), earn Rewards loyalty bonuses of up to +5% on items $200 and over, and elect site credit, which pays five (5) percent over cash. That is the whole toolbox.
What you cannot reduce
Start with the honest part. The category commission chart itself is fixed: your share is set by category and sold-price band, the percentages vary by category and item type, and there is no documented negotiation, waiver, or seller setting that changes them. Whether there is a separate consignment fee on top is its own question — but none of it is haggling material.
You also cannot skip authentication. Every consigned piece goes through The RealReal’s intake and authentication process — that is how the marketplace protects its buyer-side promise, and there is no pay-to-bypass option. Finally, the platform’s residual take — the gap between what the buyer pays and your commission — is structural. Nothing below shrinks it; the levers that follow all raise your side of the split instead.
Lever 1 — Aim for higher sold-price bands
Commission at The RealReal is tiered by sold price, and the seller share steps up at each band. The chart below is the clothing schedule; the pattern — higher band, higher share — holds across categories, though exact percentages vary by category and item type.
| Sold price band | Your share (seller %) |
|---|---|
| $0–$99 | 20% |
| $100–$149 | 30% |
| $150–$199 | 45% |
| $200–$299 | 55% |
| $300–$749 | 60% |
| $750–$4,999 | 65% |
| Over $5,000 | 70% |

The lever is threshold math. A clothing item that sells at $199 pays 45% — $89.55. The same item at $200 pays 55% — $110.00. One extra dollar of sale price is $20.45 of commission, because the band moved, not the chart. In practice this is an item-selection and pricing-strategy lever: be selective about what you consign, and be realistic about the band each piece can clear. Pieces likely to finish above $200, $300, or $750 are worth disproportionately more than pieces that straddle a boundary just below one.
Lever 2 — Grow Net Sales into Rewards tiers
The RealReal’s Rewards program pays a loyalty bonus on items that sell for $200 or more, sized by your Net Sales tier: Influencer +1%, Tastemaker +2%, and VIP +5% — up to +5% on a qualifying item. Trendsetter, the entry tier, earns no bonus; that is stated plainly because sellers often assume it applies everywhere.
Keep two things straight. The bonus applies only to items sold at $200 or more, and it stacks on top of the band chart rather than replacing it — the commission schedule never changes. Tier placement is driven by your Net Sales; the percentages above are from The RealReal’s Earnings Guide, checked November 1, 2026, and current tier mechanics live there. Growing into a higher tier is the slowest of the three levers, but on a steady consignment stream it compounds across every qualifying sale.
Lever 3 — Elect site credit for +5%
Per The RealReal’s site-credit terms, your commission is “increased by five (5) percent” when you elect payout in site credit instead of cash (verified November 1, 2026). Read that carefully: it is a payout election, not a fee change. The commission chart is identical either way — your payout is 5% larger because it is denominated in The RealReal credit rather than cash.
The trade only makes sense if you genuinely shop The RealReal. If you would otherwise buy nothing there, +5% of store credit is worth less to you than the full cash amount. But if a purchase is already in your future, electing credit is the single largest single-step increase available to you — and it is a lever on your take, not on the fee schedule, which is exactly why The RealReal offers it.
Worked example — a $250 clothing item
One item, three scenarios. The sold price of $250 lands in the $200–$299 band, which pays a 55% share for a Trendsetter-tier consignor taking cash.
| Scenario | Math | Your commission |
|---|---|---|
| Baseline: Trendsetter, cash | 55% of $250 | $137.50 |
| Influencer Rewards, +1% on a $200+ item | 56% of $250 | $140.00 |
| Site credit, +5% over cash | $137.50 × 1.05 | $144.38 |
United States, USD; clothing bands; single item. The credit election multiplies the cash commission: $137.50 × 1.05 = $144.375, which rounds to $144.38 at payout. A VIP-tier seller’s +5% would put the same item at a 60% share — $150.00 — before any credit election. Percentages vary by category, so re-run this arithmetic against your own item’s band. Fees we could not verify
Two fee names circulate around The RealReal consignment — the Price Review fee and the early-return fee — and neither has a published dollar amount we could verify as of November 2, 2026. The how-to-sell page we checked returned no fee figures, and the consignment FAQ was not accessible to our fetch. We mark both Not publicly available rather than inventing numbers; if you see specific figures quoted elsewhere, treat them as unverified. Neither is a lever anyway — you cannot elect around, avoid, or negotiate a fee that is not disclosed.
Get Paid Now is about speed, not a lower fee
Get Paid Now is a timing and mode fork: direct deposit within 48 hours, or site credit immediately at the +5% election. Nothing about it lowers your commission — the chart is identical either way, and the +5% quoted alongside it is just Lever 3 arriving early rather than a new discount. If timing is the problem you are solving, the mechanics live on The RealReal payout time; if fees are the problem, the three levers above are the complete list.
FAQ
Can you negotiate The RealReal’s commission?
No. The chart is fixed by category and sold-price band, with no documented negotiation or waiver. The real levers are band placement, Rewards bonuses on $200+ items, and the site-credit election.
Does loyalty status lower your commission?
Not exactly. Rewards adds a bonus — Influencer +1%, Tastemaker +2%, VIP +5% — on items that sell for $200 or more, by Net Sales tier. The chart itself never changes; your share on qualifying items does.
Is site credit really +5% more?
Yes. Per The RealReal’s site-credit terms, electing credit increases your commission by five (5) percent over cash. It is a payout election, so only choose it if you will spend the credit.
Is Get Paid Now cheaper?
No. It is faster — direct deposit within 48 hours or immediate site credit — but the commission is the same. Speed is not a discount.
