eBay Insertion Fee vs Final Value Fee: When Each One Hits

Quick answer: the insertion fee is a list-time charge, and for most US sellers it is $0 because the first 250 listings each month are free; after that it is $0.35 per listing in most categories. The final value fee is a sale-time charge: 13.6% of the total amount of the sale up to $7,500 per item (then 2.35% above), plus $0.30 per order at $10 or less or $0.40 above $10. This page is a timing view of one order, not a full treatment of either fee. To run the final value fee path, see the eBay estimator; it models the final value fee path, and insertion, Promoted Listings and International fees may sit outside it.

The insertion fee in one paragraph

Non-Store sellers get up to 250 zero-insertion-fee listings per month (more with a Store). Beyond that, most categories charge $0.35 per listing. The fee is per listing and category, is not refunded if the item does not sell, and Good ‘Til Cancelled renewals count toward the monthly allotment. For all mechanics see the insertion fee guide.

The final value fee in one paragraph

The final value fee is 13.6% of the total amount of the sale up to $7,500 per item, then 2.35% on the portion above. The base is the item price plus handling, any shipping collected (with exceptions), sales tax and other applicable fees. A per-order fee of $0.30 (orders of $10 or less) or $0.40 (over $10) is added. Payments run through eBay’s managed payments, so there is no separate card processing line. See the final value fee guide.

Worked order: $42 item plus $8 shipping, with the listing-count twist

A $42 item with $8 shipping collected and $0 sales tax, so the sale total is $50. The point is the insertion fee: it depends on where the listing falls in your monthly count, not on the sale. Derived arithmetic is tagged [verify].

Short questions

Do I pay an insertion fee on every listing?

No. The first 250 each month are free for non-Store sellers; the $0.35 applies after that in most categories.

Does the final value fee apply if I list but nothing sells?

No. It is charged on sales. An insertion fee beyond the allotment is not refunded if the item does not sell.
