eBay Fees Explained: Final Value Fee, Per-Order Fee, and Insertion Fees (US)

For a US seller without an eBay Store, "eBay fees" in Most categories is three named components — not one blended number. This glossary defines each: the final value fee, the per-order fee, and the insertion fee, what each applies to, and what three example sales net.

eBay fee rates checked against eBay's published selling fees help page (id=4822), with the payment-processing fact from Feebrief's fees.json (last updated 2026-10-26). Rates shown are for US sellers without a Store, in Most categories. United States, USD.

What "eBay fees" means (US sellers)

Three fees do the work: a final value fee charged on the total amount of the sale at sale time, a small fixed per-order fee, and an insertion fee that only starts past 250 listings in a month. Each applies to a different base at a different moment, which is why quoting a single "eBay percentage" loses information.

Final value fee (FVF), defined

The final value fee is the main charge: 13.6% of the total amount of the sale up to $7,500 per item, then 2.35% on the portion above $7,500 (Most categories, US). The tier break is per item, in plain language: a single item that sells for $9,000 pays 13.6% on its first $7,500 and 2.35% only on the remaining $1,500 — the 13.6% never applies to the whole amount.

What the percentage applies to

The 13.6% is not on the item price alone. The FVF base is the item price plus handling plus shipping collected from the buyer plus sales tax and other applicable amounts. That matters in practice: a $50 item with $8 of buyer-paid shipping has its final value fee calculated on $58, not $50 — shipping collected increases the fee.

Is there a separate card-processing fee?

No. Payment processing is included in eBay's managed payments structure; the final value fee and the per-order fee are what come off a payout, with no separate card-fee line on top. That pre-empts the most common "hidden fee" question.

The per-order fee and its $10 threshold

The most-missed detail in eBay fee explainers is the per-order threshold: $0.30 if the order is $10 or less, $0.40 if it is more than $10 (Most categories, US). The boundary sits exactly at $10.00 — a $10.00 order pays $0.30, a $10.01 order pays $0.40. It is charged once per order, not per item, so multi-item orders pay it a single time.

Insertion fees: the 250 free listings

An insertion fee is charged when you list, not when you sell: the first 250 listings per month are free, and listings beyond that cost $0.35 each (Most categories, US). Unlike the final value fee and per-order fee, it is paid whether or not the item ever sells — but for a seller staying under 250 listings a month, it is generally $0. How to manage listing volume is a tactics question with its own page; this glossary only defines the fee.

Worked examples (sales tax $0)

Worked baseline: US non-Store seller, Most categories, sales tax $0, no shipping or handling collected, within the 250 free listings. United States, USD.
Sale priceFVF (13.6%)Per-orderTotal feesNet
$50$6.80$0.40$7.20$42.80
$100$13.60$0.40$14.00$86.00
$500$68.00$0.40$68.40$431.60

Each row is straight arithmetic on the rates above: 13.6% of the item price (every sale is under $7,500, so the 2.35% tier never engages), a $0.40 per-order fee (each sale is more than $10), and no insertion fee (within the free 250). The baseline assumes sales tax $0 and no Store; real orders also add shipping collected and sales tax to the FVF base, so real numbers vary — see the estimator below.

Does an eBay Store change these fees?

One pointer only, since Store tiers are their own topic: a Starter Store keeps the same headline final value fee as a non-Store seller — 13.6% up to $7,500 per item, then 2.35% in Most categories. Basic and above pay a different band: 12.7% up to $2,500 then 2.35%, in the Most Clothing / catch-all scope, per eBay's store selling fees. Subscription prices are not restated here; check eBay's store fees page before doing tier math. The per-order and insertion structure above is the non-Store baseline this page defines.
