Depop vs Facebook Marketplace fees: processing-only vs local/shipped fork

One $65 jacket, three endings. On Depop the mandatory seller charge is payment processing alone — 3.3% + $0.45, calculated on the item price plus shipping plus applicable taxes — because the selling fee itself sits at 0% in our current record. On Facebook Marketplace the price of selling depends on which half of the fork you take: hand the jacket over at a local pickup paid in person and Meta's cut is nothing; box it and send it through onsite checkout and a tenth of the order total, never less than $0.80, comes off the top. Run that $65 basket (with $6.50 of sales tax where checkout applies) through all three endings and the banked amounts land at $68.69 on Depop, $65.00 local, and $64.35 shipped. Below, those nets are shown to the cent, the $0.80 floor under cheap FBM orders is priced, and the optional 12% Depop Boost that can flip the finishing order is run as its own scenario.

Last updated . Depop figures come from Feebrief's Depop fee record (FACTS-batch4, cross-checked against fees.json); Facebook Marketplace figures come from Feebrief's Meta fee record (FACTS-batch1). Both records dated . Scope: United States, USD, individual sellers.

Feebrief is independent of Depop and Meta and is not an official calculator for either. Everything here is reference math, not pricing advice; rates move, and the platforms' own help pages outrank this page wherever they disagree.

What you bank on a $65 sale: Depop vs both halves of the FBM fork

The basket: a $65.00 item, $0.00 shipping, and $6.50 of sales tax where a checkout is involved, for a $71.50 total on the two digital routes. Depop's processing runs at 3.3% of $71.50 ($2.36) plus the fixed $0.45. FBM's shipped route takes 10% of the same $71.50. The local route never touches a checkout, so the tax line simply doesn't exist on it — a buyer hands over $65.00 and that asymmetry is part of why local always looks clean.

RouteThe fee, written outFeeBanked
Depop, app checkout, Boost off3.3% × $71.50 + $0.45$2.81$68.69
FBM local, paid in personNo Meta fee is listed for in-person sales$0.00$65.00
FBM shipped, onsite checkout10% × $71.50$7.15$64.35

One reading note: the banked column treats the full checkout total as the pot and subtracts only platform fees. Where sales tax applies, platforms generally collect and remit it themselves, so read these numbers as a measure of fee drag rather than take-home pay. On that measure, Boost-off Depop wins the checkout routes on this basket by $5.66 over shipped FBM — its 3.9% effective rate against FBM's flat 10% — while free local keeps a $3.69 edge over Depop.

Drop the price to $30.00 ($33.00 with tax) and the finishing order doesn't move: Depop takes $1.54 (3.3% × $33.00 = $1.09, plus $0.45) and banks $31.46; shipped FBM takes $3.30 and banks $29.70; local takes nothing and banks $30.00. What does shift is proportion. Depop's fixed $0.45 weighs 4.7% of a $33.00 total against 3.9% of the $71.50 one, so Depop's processing gets relatively dearer as prices fall, while FBM's 10% stays 10% at any size — until its floor intervenes, which is the cost map's business, next.

Notice the twin bases: Depop's 3.3% and FBM's 10% run on identically worded totals — item plus shipping plus applicable taxes — so the entire shipped-route gap is the rate itself, 3.3% versus 10%, plus what each route stacks on top (a $0.45 fixed piece for Depop, an $0.80 floor for Meta). The floor only bites when 10% of an order falls below $0.80, meaning totals under $8.00: a $6.00 item with $0.60 tax owes the full $0.80, an effective rate near 12.1% — and, on that same $6.60 total, Depop's $0.67 of processing (3.3% × $6.60 = $0.22, plus $0.45) actually undercuts it. Very cheap shipped orders are the one corner where Depop's math beats both FBM lanes.

Shipping labels sit outside every figure above. A prepaid Meta label on a shipped FBM order has its cost deducted from the payout, and no single label price is published, so none is quoted here. On the Depop side, the one label fact that touches fees is narrow: Boost never applies to the Depop Shipping label portion. How Feebrief gathers and dates these records is described in how we track fees, and our independence is spelled out in the disclosure.

Boost on at $65: the optional 12% swing

Everything above assumes Boost stays off, which is its default state. Switch it on and Depop adds 12% of the item price — $7.80 on the $65.00 jacket — on top of the $2.81 of processing, for $10.61 of total charges and a banked $60.89. That single toggle drops Depop from the cheapest checkout route on this basket to the most expensive of the three, $3.46 below shipped FBM's $64.35. Two scoping details from the record: Boost applies to the item price, plus the shipping charge only if you supply your own label, and never to the Depop Shipping label portion; and it exists only on listings created from onward. Whether the extra visibility repays 12% is a merchandising question this page doesn't price — the fee mechanics alone are in the Depop Boost fee explainer.

When local FBM still wins despite Depop's 0% selling fee

A zero selling fee is not zero fees. The 3.3% + $0.45 processing charge is mandatory on every Depop sale, so a seller willing to hand an item over for cash banks more on a local FBM sale at every price this page works — $65.00 against $68.69 looks close until you remember the Depop figure includes $6.50 of tax in the pot, and the gap only widens from the buyer's side of the ledger. Local also wins by physics for anything heavy, bulky, or fragile that doesn't ship gracefully.

The counterweights are real, though, and they're about demand, not arithmetic. Depop's audience is concentrated in fashion and apparel, where a buyer may pay full price on an app and lowball on a garage-sale listing; a seller with the right item may clear it faster on Depop even after processing. And as shown in the cost map, the rare situation where shipped beats shipped for Meta is very small orders — below $8.00 in total, FBM's floor pushes its effective rate above 10% while Depop's fixed $0.45 is at its lightest in absolute terms. This page prices the fork; it doesn't declare a winner beyond the math.

Running Depop numbers beyond this page

Every Depop rate used here — the 0% selling fee, the 3.3% + $0.45 processing fee, the optional Boost — is worked price-by-price in the Depop fees guide, including price points well under and over the $65.00 and $30.00 baskets above. There is deliberately no FBM calculator beside it: Meta's shipped model is a single line — 10% of the total, $0.80 floor — and the cost map already runs it for any basket you'd type in.

Short answers to three questions

Does Depop charge a 10% selling fee?

No. Per Feebrief's Depop record dated 2026-11-01, the selling fee is 0% and the only mandatory seller charge is payment processing: 3.3% + $0.45 calculated on the item price plus shipping plus applicable taxes. Comparisons still citing a 10% Depop commission are describing an older model.

Is Facebook Marketplace free when you sell locally?

Yes — $0. Meta's selling fee applies to shipped orders through onsite checkout: 10% of the total transaction value (item price plus shipping plus applicable taxes), with a $0.80 per-order minimum. An in-person local sale never routes through checkout, so no Meta fee line applies to it.

Do I have to pay Boost on Depop?

No. Boost is optional and off by default. When switched on it adds 12% of the item price — plus the shipping charge if you buy your own label, but never the Depop Shipping label portion — and it exists only on listings created from 2026-03-23. On this page's $65 basket, Boost-on adds $7.80.

Where the numbers come from

Depop rates follow Feebrief's Depop fee record (FACTS-batch4, cross-checked against fees.json) and Facebook Marketplace rates follow Feebrief's Meta fee record (FACTS-batch1), both dated 2026-11-01. Every dollar figure on this page was recomputed from those two records at write time — the nets, the floor example, and the Boost stack — and the method behind the records is open in how we track fees. Feebrief takes no payment from either platform; the disclosure covers the rest.
